Replacement of End User Computing / User Developed Applications

Critical EUC / UDAs usually start life as short term tactical fixes – for reasons of cost, speed or flexibility. Many will be replaced when the functionality of central applications catches up to meet these needs or will be retired when the fix is no longer needed. This relationship between EUCs and central applications ought to be complementary i.e. new user-driven innovation in user-developed applications continuously being replaced by more robust solutions. However, this relationship often does not work effectively because there is a lack of visibility and understanding of user development activity.

ClusterSeven brings transparency to EUC / UDA activity, allowing business and IT to jointly define the timing and road map for migration to alternative solutions – either new applications or extensions to existing ones. For a case study of such a project completed with SAS, the business intelligence company, see our Case Studies page. This approach can be applied in all EUC replacement projects, including ones as diverse as Corporate Performance Management (CPM), Business Intelligence (BI) and Trading Risk Management (TRM). ClusterSeven supports all aspects of this journey, allowing you to:

Project Planning

  • Improve the definition of project scope
  • Accelerate mapping of current data flows
  • Define current risks to support the investment case for the project

Project Optimization

  • Break the project into phases without unnecessary risk
  • Improve the focus of training on central applications with better transparency on unnecessary EUC / UDA usage

Project QA

  • Automate reconciliations between old EUC activity and the new applications to accelerate testing
  • Automate validation of EUC data consumed by the new application
  • Automate file migration for those EUCs which will continue to be required and dependent on the new application

“Solving ‘Spreadsheet Hell’ is an integral part of better business intelligence. ClusterSeven helps us to investigate the scale of the problem, define appropriate solutions and implement rigorous management of data that would otherwise live in spreadsheets ‘out in the wild’.”

Matt Quinn, Director Altius, Specialist in Business Intelligence and Performance Management, Microsoft, Oracle and BOARD Partner
